North Whidbey swim team gets a new interim coach

December 18, 2012 · Updated 2:55 PM

The North Whidbey Aquajets has a new interim coach who will lead the team — which swims out of the John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool — in the coming weeks.

North Whidbey Park and Recreation District executive director Bill Walker said Steve Witcher has been named interim head coach for the swim team.

Witcher takes over for Bob Martin, who had been leading the team for a month after longtime head coach Neil Romney was fired from his position.

Walker said Witcher had been head coach of the Cascade Swim Club in Seattle from 1989 to 2005. He was most recently coach of a swim team in Pocatello, Idaho.

Witcher will lead the swim team until a permanent replacement is found.

Walker said two people, which doesn’t include Witcher, will be interviewed next week.

He said he hopes to have a permanent coach named sometime in early January.
