Wetland rules explained

Deconstructing and explaining the new proposed wetlands ordinance to the general public is like walking a slippery slope. But it is a slope to which the Island County Planning and Community Development is attempting to apply traction.

The department held its third wetlands workshop Thursday evening at the Taylor Road fire station. More than two dozen property owners and community members turned out for the informal session to learn more about their respective circumstances.

Residents recently received a second mailing laying out the draft ordinance, which explains the daunting process the county underwent to revamp an ordinance that was established in 1984. Wetland regulations are part of the county
