The showers that doused Whidbey Island over the weekend skipped Coupeville, leaving a rain-free, but windblown, high school graduation ceremony.

The Coupeville High School Class of 2007 graduation took place outdoors late Saturday afternoon at Mickey Clark Field. Seventy-one graduates received their diplomas. They will be moving on to colleges, technical schools, the military or into the workforce.

With the break in the rain, the ceremony featured speeches by valedictorian Hayley Waterman, salutatorian Elena Caldwell, and former teacher Mark Gale, who recently retired. Waterman adopted a pop culture approach to her speech.
