Robber hits Frightville

It’s wasn’t a ghost or a monster that intruded into the haunted house at Oak Harbor’s Roller Barn Friday night. It was more like a plain, old-fashioned jerk.

Police are looking for a young man with a silver lip stud who robbed the Frightville haunted house, which is a fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Club.

Becky King, a board member of the Boys and Girls Club, was sitting at the front desk and collecting money for the popular, scary event when a young man came in. She said he checked his pockets as if he was looking for money and walked in and out several times. Little did she realize, he was probably waiting for her to be alone.

The third time he entered, the man grabbed the cash box and ran. King ran after him, chasing the man in the dark through an adjacent apartment complex until he jumped over a fence.

“Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. It was really stupid to do that, but your instinct takes over,” King said about chasing the robber. “This is the money for the kids.”

Sadly, King was not dressed as Wonder Woman when she went after the robber.

Duncan Chalfant, another board member, was inside the haunted house at the time of the robbery.

“We were all shocked. It was just shocking,” he said. “We’ve been doing this for seven years and nothing like this has happened before.”

The board members estimate that the thief got away with about $250. King said it would have been more, but it was a slow night because of the Wildcats football game. Also, members of the Boys and Girls Club, as well as children involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters, were allowed in free.

The police responded to the scene immediately.

Oak Harbor Police Capt. Rick Wallace said officers weren’t able to catch the suspect that night, but they are following up on leads. He said the robber was seen hanging out with another man just prior to the crime, which may help police catch the bad guy.

Wallace said the crime was initially classified as a strong-arm robbery, but it may be considered a theft since the man apparently didn’t threaten anyone.

The suspect is described as a white man in his early 20s, somewhere between five-foot-six-inches and six foot, wearing a silver lip piercing and dressed all in black.
