A 40-year-old Coupeville man is accused of shoving an 11-year-old girl to the ground and then choking her brother who came to her defense, court documents state.

Prosecutors charged Corey Buzard in Island County Superior Court Aug. 20 with second-degree assault and fourth-degree assault.

According to a report by Deputy Leif Haugen with the Island County Sheriff’s Office, Buzard got into a fight with the 11-year-old girl on the night of Aug. 15. She pushed him away when he “got into her face,” the report states. In response, he allegedly used both hands to push her to the floor.

The girl’s 26-year-old brother tried to intervene, but the two men ended up fighting.

Buzard allegedly started choking him until the younger man had trouble breathing, the report states.

The report indicates that both men had been drinking beer.
