Sailor charged in club shooting

One of the two sailors injured in a shooting outside an Oak Harbor nightclub early in the morning of Feb. 3 was arrested after he was released from the hospital Friday.

Oak Harbor Police Capt. Rick Wallace said 26-year-old Vincent Harrison, a sailor with VAQ-134, was taken into custody on suspicion of drive-by shooting, second-degree assault and third-degree assault.

Wallace said Harrison got into a verbal altercation with a man inside the Element club on Bayshore Drive and again in the parking lot outside the club in the early morning hours.

“We don’t have a real clear picture of what happened, but investigators believe there was some sort of perceived insult,” Wallace said.

According to Wallace, Harrison got angry and went to grab one of the three handguns he kept inside his car. His friends tried to stop him from confronting the man and the gun went off during the struggle.

The 9mm bullet went through Harrison’s abdominal area and through the leg of a 27-year-old woman. The name of the female sailor, who is with VAQ-129, has not been released.

The woman was treated and released the same day at Whidbey General Hospital.

Harrison’s injury was much more serious and he was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was treated for nearly three weeks.

Wallace said witnesses to the incident have been largely uncooperative with detectives and could face arrest for obstructing or hindering an investigation.
