Deception Pass State Park burn to create smoke at Hoypus Point

Deception Pass State Park workers will will be burning brush at the Hoypus Point area for the next couple of days. This will create a plume of smoke just west of Hoypus Point.

Jack Hartt, park manager, made the announcement Monday.

“It is unfortunate that we have not yet found an economical and logistically realistic alternative to burning debris,” Hartt said. “The park accumulates a large amount of branches and other materials on our lawns, roadways and campsites from windstorms throughout the year, especially in the winter months. Hauling small loads to the transfer station throughout the year has proven to be an unsupportable method of dealing with the debris, given our limited staff and budgets. We continue to seek other alternatives.”
