An Oak Harbor Cub Scout leader was arrested this week for allegedly raping, molesting and taking sexually explicit photographs of a teenage boy; and detectives are investigating allegations that there may be three or more additional victims, according to the Island County Prosecutor’s Office.

Anthony Polubinski, 30, made his preliminary appearance in Island County Superior Court Thursday afternoon. Judge Vickie Churchill found that there was probable cause to hold him on suspicion of multiple counts of child molestation, child rape, possession of child pornography and intimidating a witness.

Churchill set his bail at $500,000, agreeing with the prosecutor that Polubinski is a danger to the community and likely to reoffend or run from the law.

In court, Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks stressed that Polubinski represents a danger to children because he is a Cub Scout leader with Pack 4062 and may also be involved in Boy Scouts pack.

In an interview after the hearing, Banks said he has no evidence that Polubinski molested any children from Cub Scouts, but detectives are trying to identify several juvenile victims from pornographic images found on his computer.

Banks said he is concerned that parents of children who had contact with Polubinski may freak out.

“He’s being held in jail,” Banks reassured. “They’re safe. Don’t panic.”

Banks advises parents to broach the subject gently with their children. He said if they get “even an inkling” that something might have happened, parents should end the conversation and involve police at that point.

The alleged victim, who is now 18, disclosed that Polubinski started molesting and raping him when he was 8 or 9 years old. The young man said the sexual assaults occurred “thousands of times,” according to the report by Detective Laura Price with the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

Polubinski allegedly told the teenager not to tell about the abuse or it would “tear the family apart.”

The victim said Polubinski took photos during the sexual assaults. The detectives obtained a search warrant and seized a bunch of computers from the suspect’s home on Troxell Road. An investigator located pornographic images of the teenager in a cursory search of the computers, according to the police report.

The young man said he witnessed Polubinski sexually assault three additional juvenile males. Preliminary analysis of the images on the computers confirms there are likely more victims, the report states.

In court, the defense attorney indicated that Polubinski is married and a stay-at-home dad. He is a lifetime Oak Harbor resident, a 1999 graduate of Oak Harbor High School and has a large extended family in the area.
