Coupeville schools talk online academy

The Coupeville School District will hold a special board meeting this month  to talk about adding an online academy to bolster career class options for students.

The meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 27 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Coupeville Elementary School Library. The meeting will take place before the Coupeville School Board’s regularly scheduled meeting that begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Oregon-based Ignite Education Group last month offered a proposal to the school board where the Coupeville School District would partner with the virtual academy to offer classes.

Ignite offers an online academy that emphasizes health sciences, 21st century business, technology, engineering and digital media. Ignite officials want to start one school in Oregon and one school in Washington.

The Central Whidbey school district traditionally struggles to offer a wide selection of career-oriented classes because of the small number of students enrolled.
