Big Rock slated for Coupeville council workshop

January 13, 2012 · Updated 2:26 PM

The future of the town’s famous glacial erratic rock will discussed at an upcoming Coupeville Town Council workshop.

Big Rock, which is located behind the Coupeville Coffee and Bistro on South Main Street, is currently up for sale along with the adjoining Big Rock Apartments complex.

Mayor Nancy Conard said during Tuesday’s council meeting that a recent editorial in the Whidbey News-Times is prompting staff to take a look at whether the town would be interested in purchasing the historic landmark.

Big Rock was the focal point of a lawsuit years ago where a citizens’ group tried to prevent construction of a coffee shop on South Main Street. The judge ultimately sided with the town.

The council workshop is scheduled to take place Thursday, Jan. 26, from 3 to 9 p.m. A location hasn’t been set yet.

Conard said the council will review the priorities and the projects that are scheduled to take place for the coming year.
