Island County Democrats announced the endorsement of five Democratic candidates after its regular quarterly meeting Wednesday in Oak Harbor.

The organization has endorsed Helen Price Johnson for Island County commissioner; Bob Ferguson for Washington Attorney General; Maria Cantwell for U.S. Senator; Jay Inslee for governor of Washington; and President Barack Obama.

"Our organization is committed to evaluating Democratic candidates as soon as they make their decisions to run for office," said Duane Fulgham, chairman of the Island County Democrats.

Fulgham said the organization expects that candidates for office in the 10th Legislative District and the 2nd Congressional District will hold off on making any announcements on running for office until the completion of the state-wide redistricting process.

Redistricting, prompted by the 2010 Census, will be finished in December.
