Thomas to be released today on bail

COUPEVILLE — An Island County Superior Court judge has agreed to release accused murderer and former beauty queen Peggy Sue Thomas out on bail.

Judge Alan Hancock agreed to a request from Thomas' attorney to allow her release from the county jail on Friday after she posted a $500,000 property bond.

The bond was secured by a property owned by Thomas in Las Vegas, Nev. that is worth $331,320 and another owned by her mother, Doris Matz, in Langley that has a market value of $231,924.

Hancock kept other restrictions on Thomas' bail in place; that she have no contact with three witnesses in the case, and that she wear a GPS device so her location can be verified.

The bail for Thomas was reduced from $5 million to $500,000 late last month. Thomas has been named by authorities as an accomplice in the murder of Russel Douglas of Langley, who was found shot dead near Freeland on Dec. 27, 2003.

James "Jim" Huden, who authorities allege was the triggerman in the murder, remains in custody on $10 million bail.

Huden has pled "not guilty" to the first-degree murder charge.
