Burn ban lifted in Island County

A county-wide burn ban in effect for the past several months will end today, Sept. 8, at noon.

The Island County Fire Marshal decided to lift the ban in rural county areas due to an increase in moisture levels, according to Tuesday press release from the Island County Sheriff’s Office. A permanent ban is still in effect in all cities and urban growth areas, including Freeland.

While burning is now allowed in rural county areas, fires greater than 4 feet in diameter still require a written permit. They can be obtained by calling 360-391-0392. Property under the jurisdiction of the Department of Natural Resources also requires a permit. For more information, call 360-856-3500.

Burning garbage and the use of burn barrels is illegal state wide and subject to fines up to $1000.
