Editorial: Smith well suited for job
Jul 03 2008, 10:58 PM The Republican Party did a good job in finding a fully qualified replacement for State Rep. Chris Strow, who resigned in December.

In picking Norma Smith to fill out Strow’s term, the GOP leaders gave us someone who is ready to step in with minimal training and represent the people of the 10th Legislative District from the opening gavel of the 2008 Legislative Session which begins Jan. 14 in Olympia.

The county commissioners from the three 10th District counties met last night, after this newspaper’s press time, to make the decision on the appointment final. We can only assume they did the logical and right thing and made it official that Smith is our new representative.

Charges revived against youth leader
Jul 03 2008, 11:26 AM The Island County Prosecutor’s Office charged former Oak Harbor youth leader Roosevelt Rumble last Friday with one count of sexual misconduct with a minor in the second degree.

The charge, a gross misdemeanor, alleges that Rumble, 47, abused a supervisory position in a relationship with a 16-year-old girl in order to have sexual contact with her. The incidents are alleged to have occurred between October, 2006 and July, 2007 while Rumble was senior pastor of the New Missionary Church. The victim was a member of the congregation.

Oak Harbor police had previously charged the former executive director of the Oak Harbor Boys and Girls Club with fourth degree assault with sexual motivation, arising out of the same alleged incidents. The city attorney, however, dismissed the charge in October.
