Protect your military ID
Jul 03 2008, 8:42 PM What started as a normal trip to the commissary for groceries soon turned into a nightmare on Friday March 21. I loaded my cart and proceeded to the checkout, handed the cashier my coupons and military ID as is protocol. Wrote my check and the cashier asked for my ID again. I told her she had not returned it because I was writing a check (they keep it until transaction is final) upon searching my person and purse twice with help of an employee it was not in my possession and we then started checking the register and surrounding area for the missing ID. I want to add at this point I have never lost my ID before even in all our travels overseas I have guarded it as if my life depended on it and it does. The security of our American bases depends on it. The cashier could not find it and did apologize, but in the end I left the store without my ID. The cashier had given it back to the lady in front of me or the lady had mistakenly picked it up (maybe not mistakenly).

Let’s figure out global warming
Jul 03 2008, 8:41 PM How much of global warming is due to carbon dioxide (CO2) levels caused by humans? The experts are giving us all different stories. These debates are so politically motivated on both sides that any scientific claims made are highly questionable.

So what are lay people like us supposed to believe? I suggest that the best course is to try to do some figuring yourself. Here is an example calculation:

Be a partner in prevention
Jul 03 2008, 8:41 PM Hats off to Eileen Brown for taking her hat off to IDIPIC in her column Feb. 13. It was very much appreciated by not only myself but I am sure everyone connected in some way to the Impaired Driving Impact Panel of Island County.

And let us also take off our hats to the good ship IDIPIC’s dedicated crew without whom there would be no panels striving for safer roads and safer kids in our communities, nor would there be our underage drinking/other drug prevention work in our schools from third grade on up. (Third-grade teachers, have we got a program for your class! Please inquire about PICKLES.)

Rezone limits property owners
Jul 03 2008, 8:41 PM The Island County Commissioners unanimously approved rezoning a large portion of land on North Whidbey as “crash zones” without notification of ANY property owners holding less than ten acres per parcel located in one crash zone category (APZ1). Those property owners that were notified were told that the only effect this zoning would have is the property owners would not be allowed to subdivide their property.

THIS IS NOT TRUE! WE HAVE BEEN LIED TO BY VIRTUE OF OMISSION! THIS ZONING SIGNIFICANTLY REMOVES OUR ABILITY TO USE OUR PROPERTY!

Felony too high a price to pay
Jul 03 2008, 8:48 PM This letter is to let people know that there is another side to the story of the paramedic, Trace Adams, who was recently convicted of Internet trespassing.

I have known Trace for many years, and I won’t justify what he did, which was simply reading his ex-girlfriend’s emails, but I will say that the punishment doesn’t seem to fit the crime. They say this is a felony. The penalty could be 3 1/2 to five years in prison.

A felony conviction for reading his ex-girlfriend’s emails? He has lost his job as a paramedic, which he was very good at, and will never be able to work in the medical field again, because of the felony conviction. Trace is also a military veteran, and if offered the choice between going to prison or serving a year or more in Iraq as a paramedic with our U.S. forces (an option I suggested to the judge presiding over the case), he would have taken the option to serve instead of being a burden on our taxpayers while his skills waste away in prison. He was not given that option.

Sweet results for See’s sale
Jul 03 2008, 8:48 PM The 11th annual See’s Christmas Candy Sale sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Oak Harbor was a success and we are grateful to all who supported us by buying candy.

We want to especially thank the Chamber of Commerce for the use of their trailer and Jeff and Mary Jo Lambert of Diamond Rentals for their generator.
