Man jumps off Deception Pass Bridge

A 28-year-old Bellingham man committed suicide Thursday morning by leaping from Deception Pass Bridge, according to Island County Coroner Robert Bishop.
Bishop said a man driving over Deception Pass saw a pedestrian walking along the bridge.
After passing the pedestrian, the driver said he looked in his rearview mirror and noticed the man had disappeared.

I was very disappointed in our community leaders when the recycling initiative was repealed.
Our environment should be of the highest priority, especially because ours, Whidbey Island, is a particularly fragile one.
I say this because this Earth is our home, we all live here, Democrats and Republicans, rich and poor, young and old. The current state of our Earth is neither healthy or sustainable.
Suspect in burglary sought by Island County sheriff

Island County Sheriff Mark Brown is asking for the community’s help in locating a man suspected in a South Whidbey burglary.
Robert Dean Burns, 25, is a fugitive from justice and is wanted on warrants out of Island County, Oak Harbor and Renton, Brown said.

I’ve been thinking this week about walking very difficult paths and I recalled the moment, years ago now, when our daughter announced she wanted a horse more than anything in the world.
The idea sounded wonderful and wholesome and well, kind of romantic to me. It also sounded way beyond me, for I am a countrified city girl.
I also promised myself I’d be a flexible parent.

Oak Harbor schools superintendent accepts Richland post

Rick Schulte is moving on.
After 20 years as the Oak Harbor School District's superintendent, Schulte is leaving to take on the same role on the other side of the Cascade Mountains.
The Richland School District announced Monday that it has selected Schulte as its new superintendent. Pending contract negotiations, he will start his new job on July 1.
