Some not keen on Island County's new shoreline plan

The update of Island County’s shoreline master program took a giant leap forward at a meeting in Coupeville late last month.
Following a public hearing, Dec. 27, the Island County Commissioners approved the plan in a split 2-1 vote.
Oak Harbor fast food employee accused of burglary and arson charged

A Burger King employee accused of breaking into the restaurant after hours, stealing money from the safe and starting a fire to cover his tracks is facing a series of charges in Island County Superior Court, according to Oak Harbor police.
Prosecutors charged 20-year-old Kintorious London, in Island County Superior Court Jan. 2 with second-degree burglary, second-degree theft, malicious mischief in the first degree and second-degree arson.
Oak Harbor Police Detective Ron Hofkamp said a security camera provided all the evidence he needed to catch the suspect.
Whidbey General Hospital installs new CT machine

Work began this week on a project to improve the imaging services at Whidbey General Hospital. Those upgrades should improve privacy, safety and speed of service for patients.
Workers are spending the week installing a CT scanner in the bowels of the Coupeville-based hospital.
Hospital diagnostic imaging manager Randy White is quick to note the improvements the new machine will have over its predecessor, which is 10 years old.
Friday fires claim two structures on Central Whidbey

An early morning fire claimed the home of a Greenbank man last week and another fire a few hours later on the same day destroyed a shed south of Coupeville.
The first blaze was reported just after midnight on Friday, Jan. 4. Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue arrived about five minutes after receiving the call to find a single-story house fully ablaze.
Located on Smuggler’s Cove Road, just north of Lagoon Point, firefighters with the aid of South Whidbey Fire/EMS crews worked for about an hour to completely extinguish the fire.

As Dave Coleburn from Predators of the Heart wheeled cages and more cages into Coupeville Library Friday, the meeting room filled with children wiggling with excitement to see what was inside. The library program Animal Encounters promised snakes, a skunk and other scaled and furry creatures, but the families were in for a surprise.
