Group recommends Port of Coupeville should consider selling Greenbank Farm

A majority of volunteers examining the future of the Greenbank Farm voted this week that the Port of Coupeville should explore selling the publicly owned farm.
The Greenbank Farm Executive Planning Group released its report this week after spending six months researching the farm’s operations, interviewing leaders from the farm and Port of Coupeville and developing recommendations about how the farm should be operated after a current lease with the Greenbank Farm Management Group expires March 31, 2013.
Greenbank Farm recommendations unveiled

A group of eight volunteers spent the last six months figuring out recommendations on how the publicly owned Greenbank Farm should be operated.
The group, known as the Greenbank Farm Executive Planning Group, recommended that the Port of Coupeville shouldn’t extend the current contract with the Greenbank Farm Management Group, which is set to expire March 31, 2013. In addition, the group recommended that the port should solicit requests for proposals for the selection of future management for the group. The volunteers also stated that the port, as it currently functions, should not assume management of the Greenbank Farm without the assistance of a management entity, according to a report released Wednesday morning during a special meeting of the commissioners of the Port of Coupeville.
Oak Harbor police seek info on attempted rape

Oak Harbor police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who tried to sexually assault an employee at a local business while armed with a gun Wednesday, Jan. 2.
The man entered Whidbey Tropics, a tanning salon on SW Bowmer Street, at about 9:45 p.m. and displayed a handgun to a female employee. The store was closed at the time, but the door was inadvertently left unlocked, according to Detective Sgt. Teri Gardner with the Oak Harbor Police Department.
Emerson vies for top spot on Island County commission

Until the issues surrounding her Camano Island home are settled, including the $37,000 she owes in planning department fines, Island County Commissioner Kelly Emerson’s future as chairwoman remains cloudy.
During Wednesday’s work session, the board’s first meeting of the year and the first ever for freshman Republican Commissioner Jill Johnson, Emerson nominated herself to be appointed chairwoman for 2013.
Coupeville fisherman faces prison time due to DUI arrests

A 45-year-old Coupeville man could face prison time if convicted of the latest in a series of drinking-and-driving arrests, court documents indicate.
Prosecutors charged Timothy Pike in Island County Superior Court Dec. 14 with felony DUI. Under the law, a defendant can be charged with a felony DUI if he or she has been convicted of four or more prior DUIs within the past 10 years.
Armed men criticize Oak Harbor City Council for banning guns in parks

A couple of pistol-packing citizens asked the Oak Harbor City Council Wednesday to reconsider changing a city code that bans firearms from city parks, but city leaders took no action.
John Havercroft, who’s stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, argued that the council members decision not to change the code “amounts to nothing less than a criminal act.” He attended the meeting armed with a handgun.
Freeland pizza man accused of murder explores insanity defense

The attorney representing accused murderer Robert “Al” Baker is exploring a defense of insanity or diminished capacity, court records indicate.
Baker is facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of his wife, 53-year-old Kathie Baker. The couple owned Harbor Pizzeria in Freeland and were well known in the South Whidbey community. They met while they were both working in Antarctica on a scientific research project.
