Alex Thierry, who moved to Whidbey Island in August to take a position as a pottery teacher and swim coach at Oak Harbor High School, was renting a home on West Beach Road when the severe storm Monday caused the bulkhead behind the house to fail. “I only have what I took to work,” Thierry said.
Loose dogs caught at Fort Ebey State Park

He fed the dogs and helped catch them.  - Contributed by Phillip Cook Dec 19 2012, 12:40 PM Fort Ebey State Park on Central Whidbey was reopened this weekend when two aggressive dogs were finally caught after running loose in the area for five days. Carol Barnes, the Island County animal control officer, is now asking for the public’s help in identifying the person who abandoned the dogs at the park. She encourages anyone who knows who may own the dogs to call the dispatch center at 679-9567 and request to contact animal control.
Oak Harbor man charged after allegedly assaulting girlfriend and possibly breaking arm
Dec 18 2012, 2:46 PM A 37-year-old Oak Harbor man is accused of choking and hitting his girlfriend, possibly breaking her arm, court documents state. Prosecutors charged Albert Hull III in Island County Superior Court Dec. 5 with assault in the second degree, assault in the fourth degree and violation of a court order. The assault charges were filed as domestic-violence related counts.

The Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce is unveiling a new advertising campaign, “Just a Splash Past Deception Pass,” to encourage visitors at Deception Pass State Park, one of the busiest parks in Washington state, to continue driving south on Highway 20 rather than heading north onto Fidalgo Island.
Oak Harbor woman charged after drunken revenge plot
Dec 18 2012, 2:54 PM A 44-year-old Oak Harbor woman is accused of breaking into her ex-boyfriend’s home, burning his belongings in the backyard and driving drunk, court documents state. Prosecutors charged Lynn C. Johnson in Island County Superior Court Nov. 28 with burglary, malicious mischief in the second degree, DUI (0.15 BAC or higher) and hit and run. She pleaded not guilty Dec. 10.
North Whidbey swim team gets a new interim coach

North Whidbey Park and Recreation District executive director Bill Walker said Steve Witcher has been named interim head coach for the swim team.

At a ceremony held at the Officers’ Club on Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Naval Aircrewman Mechanical 1st Class David Smith, Cryptologic Technician Technical 1st Class Stephanie Henning and Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Albert Goodson were selected the Sea Sailor, Shore Sailor and Marine of the Year, respectively.

Dec 18 2012, 3:08 PM I am one of 191 citizens of the neighborhood in the vicinity of Fort Nugent and West Beach Road that signed petitions asking the Board of Island County Commissioners to designate our neighborhood a “no shooting area.” More than 95 percent of the residents approached signed this petition: active/retired military, active/retired LEOs, NRA members, local gun club members, etc.

Dec 18 2012, 3:10 PM I am an Island County citizen who lives in the vicinity of Fort Nugent and West Beach Road in unincorporated Island County. Like many of my neighbors, I have signed a petition asking Island County Commissioners to designate our neighborhood a “no shooting area.” Over the past several weeks, the Island County Board of Commissioners has been drafting changes to the current gun regulation ordinance. This is the result of being petitioned by our community because of population density and close proximity of homes.
