The City Council confirmed the mayor’s appointment of Larry Cort as the city administrator during the meeting Tuesday. Cort has been serving as interim city administrator since June. City Council members and the mayor had glowing remarks about Cort, especially regarding his communication abilities.

Patient charged with assaulting nurse at Whidbey General Hospital
Dec 07 2012, 2:55 PM A 26-year-old patient who assaulted a nurse at Whidbey General Hospital last month is facing a felony charge. Prosecutors charged Ara J. Badayos in Island County Superior Court Nov. 28 with third-degree assault. Badayos is accused of assaulting a nurse or health care provider while he or she was performing her duties.

Following a heated meeting last month in which a first draft was vetted before the public, the board met several more times and is now considering a range of amendments that would essentially exempt existing and licensed shooting clubs as well as established hunting areas.
Island County to auction off default parcels
Dec 07 2012, 3:03 PM The Island County Treasurer will auction 34 or fewer parcels of land to the highest bidder at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at the Island County Commissioner’s Hearing Room, 1 NE Sixth St. in Coupeville. The parcels are being sold due to non-payment of 2009 and prior property taxes. On Nov. 26, the Island County Superior Court ordered the treasurer to sell the property.

Oak Harbor approves challenging $82-million budget
Dec 07 2012, 3:06 PM City officials in Oak Harbor completed the two-year budget this week in what was described as the most difficult fiscal exercise in more than a decade. While Oak Harbor made it through the worst of the Great Recession relatively unscathed, Finance Director Doug Merriman said balancing the books for the coming years was a challenge because of an unexpected drop in revenues.
