Penn Cove mussels aid in research project
Nov 30 2012, 10:28 AM On a recent sunny day, a group of volunteers were bundled up to insulate against the brisk winds that whipped across Penn Cove. The graduates of the 2012 class of Washington State University Island County Extension Beach Watchers dipped their gloved hands into bowls of cold water and pulled mollusk after mollusk out to take measurements.
Review North Whidbey aquatic club financials | Letters
Nov 27 2012, 4:24 PM Regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding recently fired North Whidbey Aquatic Club coach Neil Romney and administrative assistant Vikki Robinson, I can’t help but wonder what is really going on here. Mr. Romney apparently is a good coach, as his supporters have voiced, and North Whidbey Park and Recreation District Director Bill Walker, does not dispute that. So the issue must be elsewhere. Doesn’t that always mean — follow the money?
Swim program is a tremendous asset | Letters
Nov 27 2012, 4:31 PM After surviving Hurricane Sandy, a brutal Nor’easter and 13 days without power, cable, phones and rationed gasoline, our Long Island family thought we’d get a pass on bad news for a little while. Our hopes were dashed when I visited the Whidbey News-Times website and saw the lead story on Coach Neil Romney’s firing.
North Whidbey park district turmoil a direct result of director | Letters
Nov 27 2012, 4:31 PM Norm Haverman’s letter to the editor on Nov. 24 begs a response. Are Mrs. Schroeder and Mrs. Pape concerned that what has happened at NWPRD has hurt the swim team kids and hurt the community? Yes. Is it shameful that they are courageously speaking out and seeking the truth? No.
Thank you for your veteran support | Letters
Nov 27 2012, 4:32 PM The members of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 47 would like to thank the local Oak Harbor businesses: Ace Hardware, Applebee’s, Saar’s Market and Walmart for supporting our annual Forget-Me-Not drive. We are grateful to the citizens of Whidbey Island and surrounding communities for donating so generously on Veterans Day. All donations received will go towards purchase of a new van. The van transports veterans from Island County and four other counties up and down the I-5 corridor to the Seattle VA Medical Center, Monday through Friday. Regulations dictate that for the safety of all motorists the van may not be used for transportation beyond 200,000 miles; currently our van has 140,000 miles. We have approximately one more year of usage before we will need to replace the van.
Gay marriage is not Haugen’s problem | Letters
Nov 27 2012, 4:32 PM Could it be that the voters were fed up with Senator Mary Margaret Haugen’s propensity for pork barrel politics? Could it be that after her long term in the office the Senator was out of good ideas? It would seem that by the election results the voters were tired of the tax-and-spend policy of her party.
No time before financial ruin | Letters
Nov 27 2012, 4:31 PM There are well written explanations of the United States fiscal cliff online and I strongly advise every reader to read it.
Will park levy increase to cover repairs? | Letters
Nov 27 2012, 4:33 PM From my review of the North Whidbey Park and Recreation District’s annual budget on their website, it appears the aquatic club and running club members have been subsidized hundreds of dollars per member yearly from the annual property levy. Apparently some of the club members are from Coupeville and areas of Island County not subject to the park district levy.
Flashing traffic lights don’t work | Letters
Nov 27 2012, 4:34 PM I didn’t want to write this, but as you can see I just couldn’t take it anymore. What a waist of our money. Really! I’m talking about the two digital speed limit signs on Loerland Lane. The speed limit is 30 until you come up the hill going toward Swantown then it slows to 25, and the other one coming off Swantown on to Loerland. All 25! What is that supposed to mean?
