Letters show Whidbey's passion | Editorial
Nov 13 2012, 2:54 PM It’s been three weeks since I moved to Whidbey Island and started as editor of the Whidbey News-Times. I moved here not really knowing much about the island or the communities that inhabit it. In these three weeks I have done as much “sight seeing” as I possibly can, seeing what there is to offer. What I found are communities with passion.

Calling levy ‘a scam’ is shameful | Letters
Nov 13 2012, 3:08 PM Bill Burnett’s Nov. 9 letter labeling the school district’s maintenance and operations levy “a scam” is shamelessly inaccurate. First and foremost, property taxes will not “double” should the levy pass. The owner of a $250,000 home will see an increase of about $20 per month. The school levy is about 10 percent of all of the property taxes that a property owner pays. Whereas it is true that the February levy request is an increase, it is about as close to doubling a property owner’s taxes as Burnett ever gets to the truth.

Romney was by far the best coach | Letters
Nov 13 2012, 3:14 PM I began swimming with North Whidbey Aquatic Club when I was 8 years old. By the time I was 13, I had swam for four head coaches. Neil was hired as I was entering my freshman year of high school. He was granted a waiver by the state to coach both high school and club that year and because of his coaching excellence, he was voted Coach of the Year by his peers.
Don’t let coach’s firing hinder performance | Letters
Nov 13 2012, 3:16 PM I’m writing in response to the termination of Neil Romney, coach for North Whidbey Parks and Recreation District. As a competitive long-distance runner, I changed coaches several times during high school and college. My college coach, whom many of us adored, was also terminated. My message to kids and parents, is that while coaches become our mentors, our friends, etc. sometimes we have to let them go. Every one of my coaches taught me valuable lessons about my sport and about myself.
Pool management not using common sense | Letters
Nov 13 2012, 3:17 PM I’m writing in regard to Head Coach Neil Romney’s and Vikki Robinson’s recent termination at the Oak Harbor pool. Both of these individuals have put in countless hours far beyond what would have been expected of any individual, including countless hours of volunteer work by Vikki for four years, which helped keep North Whidbey Aquatic Club running smoothly.
