Levy crucial to support schools | Letters
Nov 06 2012, 2:59 PM Quality schools promote responsible citizenship, develop capable leaders, encourage entrepreneurial spirit, provide local businesses with trained, hard-working employees, attract new businesses, stabilize property values, prepare the citizens that will fund Social Security and Medicare in the future and assure deployed service members that their children are constructively active and learning. Strong schools are a source of pride to a community that values responsibility and work ethic. Advocating for an educated citizenry is the height of patriotism; well educated students are the insurance that America will continue to be great. We all benefit from quality schools, but what can you, as an individual, do to help our students?
Thankful for NAS Whidbey | Letters
Nov 06 2012, 3:08 PM I want to take a moment as we near Veterans Day and sincerely thank our action heroes at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. Especially this year with the cruel progressive agitation aimed directly at action heroes whose idea of public service is not pontification, but protection for all of us from terror and for our Constitutional way of life.

Solution sought for Penn Cove area noise pollution | Letters
Nov 06 2012, 3:09 PM I write to express my concern, along with that of a significant number of my friends, about the perpetual problem of noise pollution over the Penn Cove area, caused by the “practice runs,” which continue, in spite of promises by those in charge, to stop by 11 p.m. We understand that these practice runs are necessary in order for pilots to prepare themselves for landings on carriers on the high seas, which can be far more precarious than landing on terra firma. It is obvious that these practice runs are necessary just as basketball players must practice their shots so that their muscle memory knows its part and can function when the pressure is on.
Oak Harbor would thrive without Navy | Letters
Nov 06 2012, 3:23 PM No evidence supports the idea, expressed by some locals, that Oak Harbor would become a “ghost town” if the Navy were to leave Whidbey Island. Tourism would complete the long, narrow paradise that is now cut in two by the island’s least attractive feature for most tourists. For years, the Greater Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce had a trailer at Deception Pass, staffed by volunteers, to encourage visitors to continue southward to enjoy the benefits of Oak Harbor. The trailer no longer serves that function.
Moving forward at Greenbank Farm
Nov 06 2012, 4:09 PM Speaking on behalf of the Greenbank Farm Management Group, I’d like to respond to the article that appeared in the Oct. 24 issue of the Whidbey News-Times about the Port Of Coupeville’s review panel and concerns about our finances. The letter from Ms. Gardner that is discussed in the article alludes to accounting and tax reporting deficiencies only in the most general and undefined way. For an organization that strives to be effective and transparent, this is extremely frustrating in that we have no specifics to respond to.
