Editorial: Hey, look what’s on TV
Jul 03 2008, 10:57 PM Viewers of Oak Harbor’s cable Channel 10 were pleasantly surprised last week to see the first televised meeting of a City Council workshop session.

The previous city council discussed taking that action for months, but never voted to go ahead with it. It appears that new Mayor Jim Slowik took it upon himself to get it done as quickly as possible after he took office. The workshop took place prior to the regular City Council meeting so the logistics of televising it were simplified, but it was an outstanding effort.

Editorial: Catch these winning girls
Jul 03 2008, 10:57 PM The Oak Harbor High School football team has gotten most of the local prep sports publicity in recent years, and for good reason. With several state playoff appearances and one state championship to their credit, they’ve deserved the attention.

But, let’s not forget about North and Central Whidbey’s outstanding female athletes. This winter, the girls basketball teams from both Oak Harbor and Coupeville are enjoying outstanding season.

Editor's Column: County needs to look more rural
Jul 03 2008, 10:57 PM Islanders could make it much easier on our overworked legislators if they would just look more rural.

Rep. Barbara Bailey and Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen have again introduced bills to define Island County as a rural county. This isn’t just something to put on some real estate company’s brochure when it depicts an inviting island development on 300 formerly rural acres, it’s got real meaning to it. In this state, if you’re designated “rural” you get more money from the government.

Ferry service quite impressive
Jul 03 2008, 8:46 PM Much has been written regarding the Keystone to Port Townsend ferry issue. Our elected officials could have opted to shut down the run for a period of time. Luckily for all of us, that did not occur. Instead of complaining and pointing fingers, perhaps a bit of gratitude is in order. I greatly appreciate the options that were implemented.

My husband and I took the whale watching boat from Keystone to Port Townsend. We knew the boat had limited capacity from reading the newspaper so we planned accordingly. We arrived early and stood in line. It was cold and windy yet it was our choice to stand in line to ensure we could board. The crew from the whale watching boat was helpful and cheerful. It was stormy and the surf pounded the windows, I felt safe. The boat was filled to capacity. Yes, there were people unable to board. The same thing happens with all ferries — we do not always make the boat we want.

We took the ferry from Port Townsend to Seattle and stayed the night. Again, the boat had limited capacity. This was also clearly communicated. Yes, there were people unable to board. The ride was fantastic! We rocked and we rolled. Ferry personnel were present and happy to discuss the boat and her history.

Voters caused ferry mess
Jul 03 2008, 8:46 PM I moved to Oak Harbor from California after witnessing the financial devastation to the state treasury caused by Proposition 13, which rolled back property taxes to levels in effect 10 years previously and limited increases from that point on.

Then, I watched in horror as Washington voters approved I-695, which limited vehicle license fees to $30. Island County voters concurred by a wide margin. At the time, a headline in another newspaper read, “State may lose the service of 10 ferries in I-695’s wake.”

Good place for traffic cameras
Jul 03 2008, 8:46 PM This is our yearly reminder to the public that West Beach Road is unsafe at the speed limit it is now. I hope that the woman who wrote the letter (News-Times, Jan. 19) will get up a petition, not just in her neighborhood but also the people that live on the whole stretch of West Beach! Enough is enough!

Whidbey News-Times has an archive of speed-related stories about West Beach Road, ones that include the irresponsible responses of our commissioners.

Course change makes sense
Jul 03 2008, 8:46 PM Like a lot of people, I was disappointed to learn of the planned change of the route for the 2008 Whidbey Island Marathon (News-Times, Jan. 12).

As a proud finisher of the 2007 marathon, I thought that the section of the race from Scenic Heights to Coupeville was one of the most scenic and (except for the pain!) enjoyable parts of the race. I admit to loving the feeling of being treated like a “hometown hero” by the citizens of Coupeville as I crossed the finish line in Town Park.

Lawson beats King’s at buzzer
Jul 03 2008, 5:39 PM The scenario at Coupeville High School’s gymnasium Friday night played out like the Gene Hackman/Barbara Hershey movie, “Hoosiers.”

64 gallons daily per person
Jul 03 2008, 11:23 AM Responding to changes in Washington Administrative Code that require the city of Oak Harbor to establish water efficiency goals by the end of this month, the City Council evaluated and approved two goals Tuesday night.

In addition, Public Works Director Cathy Rosen said the city will be responsible for reviewing and modifying the goals each time the water system plan is updated.
