Must we say if we’re gay?
Jul 03 2008, 8:46 PM I read with interest the article by Jim Larsen, “Party declaration required to vote,” in the Jan. 16 Whidbey News-Times.

I didn’t really know who I should send this to. So this seems like a good place to start. Besides, I would like to know how others feel about this.

The Supreme Court ruled that open primaries are unconstitutional. Well so is asking a person if they are gay.

School district unfair to workers
Jul 03 2008, 8:46 PM I am personally asking and inviting any school board member to attend scheduled meetings which have now broken down to the point that a mediator is needed. Please take the time to care and listen with your own ears as to what our issues are:

Marathon change is a money grab
Jul 03 2008, 8:46 PM In response to the change of the Whidbey Marathon and Half Marathon race (News-Times, Jan. 12) which plans to “skip” Coupeville this year: I am so disappointed to see that Coupeville will not be the final destination of this race. My daughter from San Francisco and my sister from San Mateo, Calif., and friends have been walking this event for the last two years and we were making it a “happening” event and challenge for our family.

Since we live in Coupeville, it was a wonderful end to the race; the last several miles down Madrona were so peaceful and serene that you never thought for one minute you were not going to make it. We went to Toby’s for lunch afterwards.

We’ll really miss Valencia
Jul 03 2008, 8:46 PM There was a prominent player missing from the article announcing Jay Turner as the new Oak Harbor High School football coach last Saturday. That player was Chris Valencia.

’Cats come alive in second half
Jul 03 2008, 5:39 PM The only way the Wildcats could have played any better defense in the second half of Wednesday’s WesCo North basketball game against Arlington was to have shut the Eagles out.

My Side of the Plate: Defense will get ‘er done
Jul 03 2008, 5:39 PM I suppose it comes from being a high school defensive football coach myself back in the old days but in my opinion, Oak Harbor could not have selected a better guy to fill the Wildcats’ head coaching position than Jay Turner.

This leader is a lifesaver
Mar 28 2008, 12:46 PM While many middle-schoolers are consumed with healthy but more superficial worries, Chris Bitting has looked beyond himself, orchestrating a project that will ultimately save lives.

Plan lists top road projects
Jul 03 2008, 11:24 AM After a year packed with extensive community outreach and the cooperation of numerous committees, the transportation element of Oak Harbor’s Comprehensive Plan was approved last Tuesday night by the City Council.

The lengthy and involved update to the transportation element includes revised goals and policies, technical analysis of the existing levels of service, six-year traffic projections, six-year capital projects, long-term projections, and a financial analysis.

Oak Harbor has seen considerable growth since the last update in 2000. The document also projects the city’s transportation needs through 2035, said Project Engineer Arnie Peterschmidt.

A room by any other name ...
Jul 03 2008, 11:24 AM There is currently only one room in the Oak Harbor School District named after someone. That is Parker Hall, located at the high school.

Administrators are now preparing for the possibility of naming other rooms in the school district by researching and developing a policy for the naming process.

Superintendent Rick Schulte said the issue came up when some people expressed a desire to name several rooms at the high school when the renovation is complete. However, the school district doesn’t have any guidelines on how rooms would be named.
