A great pool could be better
Jul 03 2008, 8:47 PM
Yes, the popular Oak Harbor pool and fitness center is well used, needed and enjoyed by many people. With the Navy pool closed, personnel must now use the North Whidbey Parks and Recreation facility. The recent letter by C. Chapin is indeed correct.
But, as a former lifeguard and swim instructor, I have never been happier with this pool than with the fanciest, elegant pools Ive used in many areas. Since 1984, I have witnessed constant efforts to improve conditions that were important.

The article written by Cynthia Woolbright (Jan. 2, Whidbey News-Times, Citizen cops patrol the streets) was outstanding and will help our recruiting efforts. I do need to add a couple of additional phone numbers: Mine is 675-6258 and the Citizens on Patrol phone line is 679-5551, ext. 677.
In the ditch with the dog
Jul 03 2008, 8:47 PM
I would like to express my deep concern and frustration with certain drivers using West Beach Road in Oak Harbor. The tipping point happened on Friday, when I literally faced headlights of cars swerving over the shoulder. As a regular walker, runner and biker on West Beach Road, I have gained important experience in terms of how to behave on this road. Safety precautions, especially during the dark winter months, are met from my side. I have even earned humorous comments upon the acquisition of a neon hat and a vest with reflective strips for myself, and a reflective collar for my dog. (You must be seen!)
In addition, the dog has a blinking light on his collar and I always carry a flashlight. We must look quite striking.
Recycling efforts need to triple
Jul 03 2008, 8:47 PM
Every so often an opinion so dangerously uninformed is published, that I must respond. Mike Lowes Dec. 29 letter was one of these. Mr. Lowe is unaware of any link between recycling and human-caused climate change, and unwilling to look for one, so I doubt my message will reach him. But other readers may be interested to know the following.Creating an aluminum product from ore requires 20 times the energy used creating the same item from scrap. The average paper mill uses 40 percent less energy to make paper from recycled paper than from fresh wood. Recycling glass? Save another 30 percent. Plastic? Recycling saves 70 percent of the energy used in creating new plastic (check out The Economist, June 7, 2007).
