Quit crying; fix the problem
Jul 03 2008, 8:47 PM The removal from service of the Steel Electric ferries on the Keystone run continues to illustrate our tendency to overuse the proverbial crying towel “woe is me” syndrome.

We’ve seen this from about everyone believed to be impacted by the degraded Keystone ferry service route. Enough is enough of this negative reaction to what should have been a preventable crisis that average intelligence should have seen coming, yet many in our community chose to ignore.

Let’s look at the positive side of the removal from service of the Steel Electric ferries on the Keystone run. First and foremost, no loss of ship, crew, or passengers to catastrophic hull failure on the ferry system’s most environmentally challenging route.

Hal Ramaley was quite a guy
Jul 03 2008, 8:47 PM I so enjoyed reading Eileen Brown’s recent article about Hal Ramaley (Life on Whidbey, Dec. 26, Whidbey News-Times).

He was truly a wonderful man and I still think of him with great fondness. My husband and I moved to Oak Harbor in 1974 with the Navy and I worked for the Chamber of Commerce (then a one-person office, open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays only)! Hal and I worked together on the Holland Happening parade and it allowed me to get to know a truly great American — and one of the most wonderful folks I’ve ever met.

Turner named Wildcats’ new head football coach
Jul 03 2008, 5:39 PM Oak Harbor High School Athletic Director Nicki Luper announced math teacher Jay Turner has been hired as the Wildcats’ new head football coach.

Turner has been an assistant coach on the staff for 12 years and spent the last eight years as defensive coordinator.

“Turner was clearly the best guy for the job,” Luper said in a press release. “He has the most experience and he knows the kids.”
