Printing changes slow Saturday paper deliveries
Jul 03 2008, 11:26 AM Whidbey News-Times subscribers are asked to be patient as Sound Publishing overcomes its “growing pains” and gets the deliveries back on schedule.

“Thank you for your patience,” said Marcia Van Dyke, News-Times publisher, after another day of Saturday phone calls from subscribers asking, “Where’s my paper?”

Saturday’s paper should be in the paper boxes by 8 a.m., but the company hasn’t been meeting that goal for several months.

Charges revived against youth leader
Jul 03 2008, 11:26 AM The Island County Prosecutor’s Office charged former Oak Harbor youth leader Roosevelt Rumble last Friday with one count of sexual misconduct with a minor in the second degree.

The charge, a gross misdemeanor, alleges that Rumble, 47, abused a supervisory position in a relationship with a 16-year-old girl in order to have sexual contact with her. The incidents are alleged to have occurred between October, 2006 and July, 2007 while Rumble was senior pastor of the New Missionary Church. The victim was a member of the congregation.

Oak Harbor police had previously charged the former executive director of the Oak Harbor Boys and Girls Club with fourth degree assault with sexual motivation, arising out of the same alleged incidents. The city attorney, however, dismissed the charge in October.

New mayor sails through first meeting
Jul 03 2008, 11:26 AM The first Oak Harbor City Council meeting of 2008 was smooth sailing for newly-elected Mayor Jim Slowik.

“This is great,” the mayor exclaimed with a laugh last Wednesday night as the council ticked off agenda items. The meeting lasted an unprecedentedly short one-and-a-half hours, although more combustible issues like the Dillard’s Addition sewer controversy have yet to go before Slowik and the council.

Opening the meeting, Island County Superior Court Judge Alan Hancock swore in the mayor and the three new council members, Rick Almberg, Jim Palmer and Beth Munns. Reflecting on the current political instability in Pakistan following the recent assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the judge underscored the gift Americans share living in a country that enjoys a peaceful transfer of power.

Story seen as unbiased
Jul 03 2008, 8:47 PM I was impressed with Paul Boring’s final article on Trace Adams. (Adams gets 22 months, Jan. 5, Whidbey News-Times). It looked like unbiased reporting by someone that was interested in both sides of the story.
