Letter: Letter writer remark ‘sexist,’ but services are necessary

Editor,

John Thompson was correct. Some letters should be returned to the writers for a rewrite, including his. He should have been given the opportunity to express his opinion without using the sexist language calling Dr. Dawn’s opinion “hysterical.”

He could have used the opportunity to demonstrate a more Christian response.

I don’t agree with her premise either. It was based on suppositions that many carry about the homeless and the poor. We have many quite poor people in our area who have not been seen until services arose to care for them.

We cannot just shut down those services because they serve a broader spectrum than just the homeless. We need to find ways to help the homeless who are in that situation because of drug addiction. We need to find ways to help those people who are underemployed.

We can’t just shut down what is helping them. We need to create better alternatives before we do.
