Hoping Navy lives up to its environmental standard award

Editor,

Page 3 of the Dec. 8 Whidbey News-Times contained two articles, “Navy base gets environmental award,” and “Seven wells tested above advisory level.”

The first article focused on volunteer projects that Navy personnel participate in. The second article is the latest in a recent string of disclosures concerning PFOS and PFOA contaminants in local wells. The most likely source is the use of Aviation Fire Fighting Foam to suppress fuel fires.

Here’s hoping the Navy lives up to the honor of receiving the “2016 Navy Community Service Environmental Stewardship Flagship Award.”
