Letter: ‘Free press’ failed the American people when it chose a side in election

Editor,

For those in the mainstream media who are surprised at Tuesday night’s election results …

You are surprised because you have failed the American public in your job as reporters and journalists.

The press is granted specific protection from government intrusion in the very First Amendment to our constitution. Why? The founding fathers had the history and foresight to know the press must be free from government control.

Think about that. That is how important your job is. Does any other profession, outside of a political office, have any sort of constitutional protection?

Not that I can think of.

You are the American public’s eyes and ears into the inner workings of our government. To publicize great and nefarious deeds alike, to shine a light on corruption and expose those working only for themselves in service of American citizens.

You stand as a guard to the keys of the kingdom.

But you have failed. Why?

Because those Constitutional protections, in part, exist so no party of government could hijack our “free” press and start what would amount to a propaganda machine.

But sadly that needn’t had occurred.

Our “free press” being hijacked by a political party did not come to pass. I think something happened that even our founding fathers could not foresee happening.

Our free press chose a side. And for that you failed us and your profession.
