Shanty Fest falls victim to Whidbey weather

January 19, 2012 · 11:32 AM

Add the Shanty Fest to the long list of events that have been canceled this week due to the weather on Whidbey Island.

The Shanty Fest, sponsored by Whidbey’s famous Shifty Sailors singing group, raises money to help poor people pay their medical bills. The two-day concert with workshops was scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20 and 21, at the Greenbank Farm.

Vern Olsen, organizer and longtime Shifty Sailor, called off the festival Thursday morning, citing travel problems enchanted by musicians scheduled to come to the island. The combination of snow, ice and wind gave Olsen little choice but to call off the event.

But it’s not over. Olsen said plans are now being laid for a one-night Shanty Fest to be held at the Greenbank Farm sometime in February. Weather permitting, of course. Call him at 360-678-5019 if you have any questions.
