Spirit of Writing contest names prize winner

Chris Spencer of Langley is the grand prize winner of the 2011 Spirit of Writing competition.

Spencer will receive a scholarship to the 2012 Whidbey Island Writers Conference in March. In addition, his winning work of short fiction, “Bubble-Up at Dell’s Diner,” will be published in the first 2012 issue of Sounding Review, a nationally distributed literary journal published by the Whidbey Writers Workshop in conjunction with the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program.

Hear the winners read from their works at programs sponsored by the Sno-Isle Libraries. An anthology of the winning works, “In the Spirit of Writing, 2011,” will be available for sale at the readings.

Readings will be: Thursday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Langley Library; Saturday, Jan. 14, 10:30 a.m. at Clinton Community Hall; Thursday, Jan. 19, 3 p.m. at the Oak Harbor Library; Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Coupeville Library; and Tuesday, Jan. 31, 7 p.m. at the Freeland Library.
