Oak Harbor's Garry Oak Gallery features Bill Schumm photos

December 1, 2011 · Updated 9:03 AM

Photographer Bill Schumm is Garry Oak Gallery’s December featured artist. Meet him at the gallery’s First Friday event on Friday, Dec. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Enjoy his images plus chocolates and refreshments.

Schumm joined the Navy 40 years ago as a chaplain and his brother, Norman, suggested he buy a camera and photograph the world.

He started with a 35 mm and a Navy destroyer on the East Coast. Later, he moved up to a larger format camera and a transfer to the West Coast, where he discovered Yosemite National Park and the photographs of Ansel Adams.

“I was in awe of those photographs,” Schumm said in a press release.

Garry Oak Gallery is located in the Harborside Village Mall in downtown Oak Harbor.
