Oak Harbor students fill the bus with food
One bus filled with food donations for the North Whidbey Help House isn’t enough for Oak Harbor schools. This year, schools will fill two buses.
“We’re blowing this up district-wide,” said Larry Falcon, Oak Harbor Middle School teacher managing the event.
This year, the event expands to include both the middle schools and all the elementary schools.
The food drive began this week and runs through Tuesday, Nov. 20. The community is welcome to drop off items at any elementary or middle school in the Oak Harbor School District.
On Nov. 20, one bus will visit each middle school to pick up the donations and drive them to the Help House.
“I told the kids, ‘Let’s try to fill the bus for the Help House.’ We’re helping our community that helps us out and it’s motivating for them to fill a bus,” Falcon said.
When his classes filled buses during past Fill the Bus food drives, Falcon described the experience as “amazing” for the students.
With grade level competitions to bring the most food, the food drive is fun as well as meaningful.
It’s a great activity for kids to understand helping others, Falcon said.
“We’re a little community in our schools, but we’re a bigger community as far as Oak Harbor’s concerned,” Falcon said.
