Whidbey Examiner staff earns 14 awards

The Whidbey Examiner took home 14 awards at the Washington Newspaper Publisher Association’s Better Newspaper Contest awards banquet this month.

The Whidbey Examiner took home 14 awards at the Washington Newspaper Publisher Association’s Better Newspaper Contest awards banquet this month.

Reporter Ron Newberry took home two first-place awards for best general feature story-long for his piece on the Kake Indian Tribe visiting Coupeville and best lifestyle feature for an article about Fort Casey Park Ranger Jon Crimmins’ return.

He also took a second- place award for best personality profile for his story on squash farmer Dale Sherman and a third-place award for best business feature story on his article highlighting Penn Cove Shellfish’s 40 years in operation.

Co-editors Megan Hansen and Jessie Stensland shared a first-place win in the best editorial category for their opinion piece, “Transparency matters for all taxing districts. Stensland also took a second-place award for the “News of the Weird” category for her Halloween piece “Officials unprepared for zombie apocalypse.”

Whidbey News Group creative artist Jen Miller won two awards for advertising for best use of process color and for best use of process color in a full page ad.

Staff also won two awards for special sections in the category for special events.
