Alaska USA to start construction
"Move over Kow Korner and Tak-Rak. Alaska USA Federal Credit Union starts construction soon on a 6,050 square-foot building on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Midway Boulevard. The rest of the 49,831 square-foot lot - which for years has been home to the Hole Bit Tak-Rak and Oak Harbor's legendary burger joint Kow Korner - will be filled with parking and extensive landscaping.Alaska USA's move to its new location was put in motion when the Oak Harbor School Board voted to buy the old Alaska building, on the corner of Oak Harbor Street and Third Avenue, at a March 27 meeting. We had a 30,000 square-foot building, and it was mostly empty, Alaska USA regional vice president Tony Steadmam said.Steadmam said construction on the new branch will start within a week and is scheduled for completion in December. The primary contractor for the project is P & L Contractors, an Oak Harbor company that has provided contracting services to Alaska USA for almost 20 years. Fakkema and Kingma, also an Oak Harbor company, provided engineering support for the building, which Cole & Thompson Architects of Anchorage, Alaska, designed. The one-story steel frame structure includes two drive-up lanes and a 24-hour ATM machine. Alaska USA's new UltraBranch self-service center will provide members access to computer banking inside the branch lobby, and the building will include enough administrative office space to accommodate future expansion of credit union services.Alaska USA also has two branches in Seattle and 32 in Alaska."
