Have a potluck for dinner

Want a high-quality, fresh family meal without going to the trouble of cooking one?

A business that opened in Coupeville last month is ready to help.

Potluck on the Porch opened May 12 on North Main Street across from the Courthouse Annex Building. The new business offers take-out meals and a gift shop geared toward local residents.

Potluck on the Porch offers made-from-scratch meals billed as a tastier alternative than a frozen dinner or a fast-food restaurant. That is a big help for families who may not have the time to cook a traditional, sit-down, family meal.

“We hand-shop for everything,” said co-owner Debbie Tasoff. “You can really taste the difference.”

Potluck offers a variety of wraps, salads and dinners that rotate on a monthly basis. The wraps and salads are popular during lunch and meals include a chicken pesto pasta, spicy macaroni and cheese, a pork loin chop and a southwest breakfast bake. Brenda Marti said 90 percent of the meals can be frozen for future use. Meals range from one-person to six-person sizes and cost between $5 and $20.

In addition to the meals, Potluck on the Porch features locally produced items, among them Whidbey Pies and JW Desserts.

More side dishes will be offered in the future. Owners Tasoff and Marti want to find out what products interest customers first.

“We’re trying to listen to the customers,” Marti said.

Potluck on the Porch is a partnership between Tasoff, who owns Serendipity Catering, and Marti, who currently owns Brenda’s Front Porch in downtown Oak Harbor. Both will operate their respective businesses in addition to the new Coupeville store.

They have known each other since the fourth grade, but also found themselves working together at weddings that Tasoff catered and Marti decorated. They eventually decided to open a store together.

The gift shop offers a variety of household items and products produced on Whidbey Island.

For Marti, the opening of Potluck on the Porch is a return of sorts to Coupeville. She previously operated Brenda’s Gift Gallery on Front Street for five years. She closed that last December. Tasoff has operated Serendipity Catering for four years.

Potluck on the Porch is located in a yellow building across from the Island County campus. They have received a boost from county employees who are picking up lunches and dinners. Marti and Tasoff also chose the location because the lot offers plenty of parking, which resolves an issue that is a problem for many businesses in Coupeville.

Potluck on the Porch is currently open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. It will also be open on Mondays starting June 26.

For Father’s Day, Potluck on the Porch is offering a feast that includes beef kebabs, loaded mashed potatoes and a marionberry pie from Whidbey Pies. Cost ranges from $30 to $90 depending on serving size.
