I want to commend Wes Heckathorn for his “Sound Off” Jan. 26 Whidbey News-Times. His taking his time and concern for the flying of “Old Glory” is so much to the point for all of us.

Wes elaborated beautifully about the history and significance of the flag over the past two centuries; in wars, in peace, in the face of terrorism. What message are we giving to the young people in the high school as they witness this apathy and lack of concern displayed by the school administration?

Wes is retiring from 24 years of naval service, with many awards of excellent commendation. He knows how the commitments and sacrifices of our young men have contributed to our freedoms. I will be happy and proud to join Wes, and purchase a flag for the school.
