Vikings plunder Wildcats
A two-point second quarter erased a 10-9 lead and sent the Oak Harbor High School boys basketball team down to its seventh-straight defeat, falling to the powerful Lake Stevens Vikings 64-29 in a Friday WesCo North game.
The Wildcats appeared on the verge of pulling things together and finally putting a W in the column after a strong first quarter of action, but it was not to be.
Oak Harbor was held scoreless from the floor in the second quarter and only a pair of Jay Stout free throws prevented the Cats from being shutout.
Meanwhile, the once beaten Vikings burned the net with 22 big points, including a 5-for-5 effort from the charity stripe by Jordan Carter, to pull away to a 31-12 halftime lead.
They kind of took the legs out of us in the second period and we didnt shoot the ball particularly well, coach Mike Washington said.
The Wildcats (1-5 league, 2-9 overall), got their scoring game back in gear in the third quarter putting up 11 points, but Lake Stevens answered with 15 and went into the final eight minutes of the game with a commanding 23-point lead, 46-23.
Lake Stevens is very good, we just have a lot of inexperienced players on the team, Washington said. We have a lot of seniors without a lot of experience, but thats no excuse. They just beat us.
With a number of reserve players on the floor, the Wildcats were once again ice cold from the field in the fourth quarter and scored just six points while the Vikings put the game away with 18 points.
Eric McCardle was the lone Oak Harbor player to score in double figures, hitting a trio of three-point goals as part of his 13-point output. Stout scored six points, all on free throws, and no other Wildcat player had more than two points.
A couple of weeks ago, I told myself that there are a lot of things we have to improve on and I told the kids we needed to work harder defensively, Washington said. Tonight, I really feel like we played well on defense. There were some breakdowns because the kids got tired, but overall I thought we played well.
Lake Stevens had three players in double figures led by Dustin Adams with a game-high 14 points. Sean Stickney had 12 and Jordan Carter scored 11 points.
Washington said there are a lot of areas the team needs to improve on.
We cant improve on all of them at one time, we need to take it piece by piece, he said.
